You have to be very, very careful telling someone who's done the experiments that he is "all wet" :-). The Schwalbe tires used in the experiment have a lot going for them, and are far better than your usual "fat tire". By-the-way, note that there are all sorts of limits on tire pressure -- not only can the tire come apart, you can also tear your rim apart, like a sliced bagel.

At first I was gonna say you are all wet, there is a long history going back to railroads on rolling resistance, then i found these guys (co incidentally, harris bike is around the corner from my house)

I wrote it to make people think, and it appears to have made you think enough to be uncomfortable enough to reply, so I'll take that as a small win.

You did miss the point somewhat -- this is not about littering, and it is instead about how driving a car gives people license to do things that would be considered destructive and rude in any other circumstance. That you don't see this as rude is entirely my point -- if the effect is obnoxious (killing animals and leaving them on public ways; smashing dropped valuables instead of picking them up to put them somewhere safe) why isn't the behavior that causes that effect also seen as obnoxious? What causes you to decide that the behavior that produces obnoxious outcomes is not itself also obnoxious?

Yes it is harder for someone riding a car to avoid running over small objects that are in the road. But, no, the car rider wasn't careless, the person didn't see the object and your antipathy towards people who drive, "...but that's a choice, isn't it?" doesn't justify your negative characterization.

All cars can't be replaced by bicycles. Some can, but not all. Car riders and their passengers may even drop more things than bike drivers or not; there are so many more that a much lower percentage of car riders could litter and still leave the vast majority of trash, etc., on the multi-use roadways. The negligence of even a few has made a mess of curbs and shoulders everywhere.

But you don't have any idea who, why or how that mouth guard got on the road. You don't know but you wrote a morality play that lays the blame in comfortable well-worn ruts. I would have preferred to read a more nuanced piece but you obviously didn't write it for me.

It was easy to predict your take on this -- I know the effective song and dance (I learned it before the book was published), and the west-bound side is about the most ineffective botch I have ever seen. But the eastbound side is quite nice (with the exception of the scary-high curbs). One extremely-low-traffic intersection, no driveways, hence none of those risks, and so wide that (with current bike/ped traffic levels) there is little harm in riding the wrong way on the good side. Technically illegal, but vastly safer, and I cannot fault someone for making the safer choice.

I don't know why they wasted the time and money to put these tracks in in the first place.
Perhaps a charging "pathway". I know this requires LiFePO4 or better batteries (not li-ion as they can't be charged nearly as fast and have thermal issues) but the electrical assist would not have to cover all the distance "everywhere". Therefore, smaller but more frequent sections of wire for the same (?) money. The lifepo4 can be fully charged in as little as 1/2 hour, but I assume that just 1/10th of a charge "here and there" (and up hills) would be good enough.

I think it depends on how you define "stupid", and it's not just grocery shopping. Nowadays, you've got the problem that the place you move near to one year, moves their offices the next year, or you lose your job and find another ten miles further down the road. This is true even in relatively dense and bike-friendly places like Silicon Valley or the inner Boston metro area.

The other thing I would hope to get at is an increase in the fraction of trips were a bicycle is "adequate for the job". Right now, for me (someone who enjoys biking, so not currently normal case in this country) that is about 50%. It's not 75%, and that means that keeping a car (an old car) running is still an interesting option. Anything that gets the AFTJ fraction up increases the chance that I'll just punt on the car, get rid of it, and for those trips where the bike is not "adequate", either suck it up and make do, or else pay for delivery, borrow/rent a car, etc.

Or to put it differently one more way, building new better cities is expensive and hard. Selling people e-bikes need not be, installing helpful infrastructure need not be, either. Reduce car use, and you'll see slow change in city patterns.

I think it depends on how you define “stupid”, and it’s not just grocery shopping. Nowadays, you’ve got the problem that the place you move near to one year, moves their offices the next year, or you lose your job and find another ten miles further down the road. This is true even in relatively dense and bike-friendly places like Silicon Valley or the inner Boston metro area.

The other thing I would hope to get at is an increase in the fraction of trips were a bicycle is “adequate for the job”. Right now, for me (someone who enjoys biking, so not currently normal case in this country) that is about 50%. It’s not 75%, and that means that keeping a car (an old car) running is still an interesting option. Anything that gets the AFTJ fraction up increases the chance that I’ll just punt on the car, get rid of it, and for those trips where the bike is not “adequate”, either suck it up and make do, or else pay for delivery, borrow/rent a car, etc.

As the price of LEDs come down, they are cost-effective for sockets that are used less. Say you're paying $.15/kWH, replacing a bulb with one using 45W less, on 5 hours per day. Delaying the bulb purchase costs you over $1 per month. If the new bulbs are not getting cheaper at that rate, then there's no risk. For a 5 year time frame, for the assumptions here, it's safe to buy any LED bulb costing less than $60. And if you don't like my assumptions, only replace bulbs now that are on even more hours per day -- if it's 8 hours, then the savings per month are almost $1.80.

There's one other risk: That LED's will come down in price later, and that you paid a premium to become an early adopter of a technology that in 5 years will become cheap and pedestrian. LED's are improving and scales of production are going up, so economy of scales will improve. Will that happen before your bulb is exhausted? And if so how much more did you pay?

What works well enough is the advice in two comments above -- change the checkInterval to a long time, like once a week (or more, doing the obvious math). If you need to get an update, clicking "About Google [whatever]" from the menu bar fires up ksfetch then and there, and presumably you okay that.

Another option that I saw I think on the google discussion of this problem is to allow ALL applications to access the Google update servers; presumably, that is not a useful website for Bad Guys to access.
