Why it makes no sense for car drivers to lecture cyclists about “the law”

October 25, 2009

and the importance of obeying it.Is it really necessary to point out the obvious — that people pick and choose the laws they wish to obey, and come up with all sorts of reasons why it’s ok that they break that particular law — but other laws, those are important.

I’m not arguing that traffic laws should be obeyed to the letter, or breaking them is unsafe — rather, I would like to point out that we already break traffic laws when we think it is safe — and bicycles, who are different from cars (slower, nimbler, better able to see and hear) might be able to do some things safely that cars cannot.

But perhaps stop signs are different. Or maybe they aren’t.
